"When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision." This quote from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho sums the story of Lina Asher's life from being an English teacher to being a visionary education entrepreneur.
As a daughter of a textile businessman, she spent her early childhood in Tanzania and Kenya. She did her primary schooling in England before moving to Australia, where she acquired her Bachelor's degree in Education from Melbourne's Victoria College.
In 1991, Lina came to India on a year long sabbatical from college, while connecting with her roots she landed up taking a school job in suburban Mumbai, an experience which changed her life. Back then, the education system in India was still grappling with archaic evaluation and straitjacketed approach to education, leaving no scope for an overall development of the child, which was a complete contrast to milieu in which she had studied. Even though she had an option of going back to Australia where she could have led a happy and content life, she chose to stay back in India to change the antiquated approach to education which existed then.
Her conviction to offer an education which sets child in its centre, led her to start her first preschool in Bandra (Mumbai) in the year 1993 with 13 students. The journey from 1 school (i.e. Kangaroo Kids Preschool) to 73 schools (73 schools consists of 55 Kangaroo Kids and 18 Billabong High International School) across 24 different cities in India as well as in Dubai and Maldives has been a phenomenal challenge. Lina's unique approach, injection of potent solutions and radical processes to ensure that the quality of education is improved was instantaneously well received and noted.
Apart from pioneering learner-centric processes and research based curriculum, Lina introduced some of the most impactful changes in the field of education. Some of those changes are path breaking methodologies and processes like real time delivery of curriculum, inclusive education, open-entry system, lowest teacher-student ratios, parent partnership model, thematic learning, two decades back, along with a dissemination models restricted to rote learning. The promising changes introduced by her have changed the face of the education, which was her dream.
Lina has been extremely passionate about creating a purpose of learning and allow children to be thinkers, innovators, problem solvers and to orchestrate experiences that will result in their overall development. With an intention to spark human greatness in every student, Lina was the first one in Indian education industry to introduce a learner centric methodology and introduce innovative ways of learning by providing an integrated activity and theme based learning. To make her dream come true Lina dedicated an in-house R&D team to constantly develop the most effective and industry-acknowledged learning solutions based on path breaking research theories such as Multiple intelligence, Thematic learning, Blooms Taxonomy etc.
Currently, while most of the players are just beginning to adopt the basics that Lina set two decades back, KKEL retains its edge on being the first and only education organization to develop a 360 degree delivery model of curriculum, infrastructure, teaching methodology, operational processes, policies and quality benchmarking from the learner's point of view.
Lina dreams of a society in which every child claims her right to quality education and a joyful childhood.
